Flying Termites

15/11/2016

Flying Termites, what's going on?

Flying termites (called alates) are the future queens and kings of a new termite colony.

The termite flight occurs when the temperature and humidity conditions are favourable outside and are like conditions inside the colony.

This usually occurs in Australia in the warmer summer months.

The termite alates (winged termites) have a thicker cuticle (skin) and are darker in colour than the workers and solders. This is to allow them to survive for a short time outside of the colony to find a suitable habitat and to set up a new colony.

A mature colony can release alates annually and the number released depends on the species, which could be from a few hundred to thousands.

Alates are attracted to florescent light, which when discovered by the homeowner, can cause panic and concern that their home is being attacked by termites.

The best course of action, don’t panic! Do not disturb the potential termite activity and call in an expert to complete a termite inspection of your property.

If live termite activity is found, a proposal will be put forward with treatment options and discussed with the homeowner.

If you have any concerns call us on 1300 476 253.

Paul

Termite Barrier

13/7/2015

Our homes are often our most expensive investment, so it makes sense to protect them from termite attack.

These days new homes are required by councils to have some sort of termite protection installed during construction, but what about existing older homes?

Termite barriers and termite treated zones are installed to existing properties. The termite prevention barrier surrounds the entire perimeter of your home, and if there is a sub floor area then work is done there as well. Product is injected into the soil around the outside and underneath your home to prevent termite attack.

The best products like Termidor come with a guarantee and last for many years.

A termite prevention plan is an important part of home ownership and can save you a significant amount of money in building repairs in the future; as termite damage is not covered by household insurance.

Rocket Pest and Termite are fully accredited Termidor installers and can help you with all your termite treatment and termite prevention requirements. Call us any time on 1300 476 253.

Have a great day,

Paul

Rats in the roof

9/7/2015

Many people all over Sydney will hear the noises of rats scurrying and scratching in their roof at night. it is important to deal with the rat invasion as soon as possible so the don't grow rapidly in numbers and infest the entire house.

The main issues with rats can be hygiene issues from their excrement and damage to property by their continual gnawing to keep their teeth in chisel like form.

As rats run throughout the roof and if they enter the house they leave a trail of urine and droppings as a way to set down familiar pathways.

When rats gnaw they will often chew through electrical wiring of your homes lighting, air conditioning/ heating units and other such items which can incur costly repairs.

There are several ways of dealing with the above rat problems and the disruption to your sleep.

Rocket Pest and Termite can provide an inspection of your home to establish the levels of rat activity and what areas the rats are inhabiting. We can then put in place an effective plan of action to rid you of the rats. We guarantee effective results.

Termites and Ants; The Myth

7/5/2013

Stories can get out of control in any situation in life. Someone says something, someone else adds to it and so a myth can be perpetuated.

I just wanted to have a quick word about the myth that many people believe that if you have black ants on your property then you don't have termites. You would be surprised how many people actually believe this one.  In reality nothing could be further from the truth.

Many home owners live with a false sense of security in their belief of this myth and run the very serious risk of having their home attacked by termites.

The truth in short is that yes, many species of ants are the natural predator of termites. However ants in a way attack a termite colony to farm a small percentage of the termite colony as a protein food source. They do not go so far into the colony as to destroy it in the same way a farmer would not kill all his cattle.

As per the Australian Standard recommendation, annual termite inspections are really a must. Think of annual termite inspections as a form of insurance against having your whole home eaten by termites. If we find termites on an annual inspection we can treat them quickly before too much damage is done, potentially saving you a significant amount in  structural building repairs.

Fleas biting? Need a flea treatment...

14/11/2012

We just love our pets, but its very important to keep their fleas under control. Your vet can give you the best advice on regular flea treatments for your pets so that the fleas are kept at bay.

If not treated the fleas can be just at home on surfaces, both soft and hard, inside and outside of our homes. Their life cycle is really quite amazing and their eggs are able to lay dormant for extended periods of time in areas of our homes and yards that are not frequently visited. Once we enter these areas and the eggs detect movement through vibration of the floor etc.. they can hatch and the cycle continues. Fleas can be so annoying with their persistent biting, they just never let up.

In our experience, products bought for home use from the supermarkets and hardware stores are rarely successful in totally eliminating flea infestations, even though some products make some grand claims.

Why? With any flea treatment it is important to cover all floor surfaces inside the home and all the surface area of the yard. Also soft furnishings need attention as well. The products used by professional pest managers are the latest available and are on patent for many years for professional use only. We use a mixture of products that kill the adult fleas and we add an insect growth regulator (IGR) to deal with the flea eggs.

Yes you can live without fleas if you have pets, you just need to ensure the vet deals with the fleas on your pets and a professional pest manager deals with fleas on surface around the home.

The importance of regular Termite Inspections

19/10/2012

Termites, or white ants as they are commonly known, cause significant damage to homes throughout Sydney and all over mainland Australia every year.

If termites are permitted to continue there attack on your home undetected for extended periods of time the damage can be so severe that the property may need to be knocked down and rebuilt. This is no exaggeration.

The Australian Standard recommends that regular Termite Inspections are carried out on homes every 6 months if there is no termite barrier or termite prevention measures in place and every 12 months or Annual Termite Inspections where there is a Termite Management System in place.

Even newly built homes require regular termite inspections. Termite management systems put in place during construction can be very effective in preventing concealed access by termites but require annual inspections to make sure they have not been breached and to keep the manufacturers warranty in place.

The good news is that with regular inspections we will often find termites in the early stages of an attack on your home and can be treated quickly and at an affordable price and most times before any structural damage has been done.

Call us any time on 1300 476 253 for some free advice and a chat about your termite concerns.
